From 6 to 8 September 2026, social media platforms became a key focus of a training program held in Al-Diwaniyah Governorate, equipping a group of women with practical skills to monitor community risks and address them before they develop into crises or conflicts.
The program was implemented by Ishraqat Development Organization (IDO) in cooperation with the Women’s Department at the Diwaniyah Governorate Office. It focused on strengthening participants’ ability to use WhatsApp and Telegram safely and effectively to share information and monitor developments within their communities.
The activity brought together women from different backgrounds, including women who had resettled after displacement, women displaced as a result of climate-related impacts, as well as female farmers. Through practical exercises, participants worked through simulated situations reflecting real-life challenges, ranging from the spread of inaccurate information and rumors to inciting content, as well as methods for documenting cases and safely referring them to relevant authorities.
The training went beyond teaching the technical use of digital applications. Its broader objective was to transform these platforms into practical tools that can help women identify early signs of community tensions and deal responsibly with circulating information, while avoiding risks associated with sharing sensitive data.
The program also included discussions and practical exercises led by Dr. Zainab Karim Al-Shahani, Director of the Women’s Department, covering community monitoring, the role of women in conflict prevention, and ways to identify signs of escalation, incitement and misinformation.
Participants were also introduced to information verification methods, safe documentation practices, privacy protection, and referral mechanisms for communicating with local authorities when cases require intervention. The sessions further addressed challenges that community monitors may face and ways to protect their well-being and mental health.
The activity was carried out as part of the “Sustainable Peace Initiative: Women’s Role in Conflict Prevention and Response”, supported by UN Women in Iraq and funded by the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF). The initiative aims to expand women’s role in community monitoring and early warning mechanisms and strengthen their ability to contribute to peacebuilding and social cohesion.
